Dance & Yoga CLASS DECRIPTIONS

YOUTH CLASSES:

Creative Movement is for young dancers ages 2-3.  Girls and boys begin to explore the world of movement through imagination. Dancers learn basic ballet steps without even knowing!  Feet sandwiches, magic flowers, prince/ princess walks, and freeze dance are just a few of the ways the children learn to express themselves through movement!

Ballet/Tap Combo classes spark passion for dance!  These classes are for boys and girls ages 3-5 and 4-7. Dancers learn ballet and tap technique through creative exercises and games.  After just a few classes the kids are able to say the names of ballet positions and tap steps, as well as understand proper posture and how to perform.  This class sets kids up for success in relationships (working with others), and success in school (tap rhythms mirror math equations).

Acro (tumbling) teaches kids of all levels proper form and technique of gymnastics skills used in the dance world.  Students learn forward and backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels, aerials, front and back walkovers, illusions, shoulder rolls, and even practice break dancing!  The balance beam is used to work on balance and coordination.  Kids also learn the importance of conditioning, by strengthening and stretching their muscles safely.

All Boy Hip-Hop/Break dancing is a blast for energetic boys ages 5-7 and 7-12!  Come prepared to sweat and have a great time!  Boys learn the latest hip hop moves, and practice safe break dancing on the mats and with proper form.

Ballet is taught classically at Ignite.  Classical Ballet teaches traditional ballet technique originating from Russia and Italy.  Dancers will focus on proper turnout, extensions, jumps, turns, across the floor, and may have the opportunity to dance on pointe, as suggested by the teacher.

Tap is made up of intricate footwork and sounds, creating extraordinary rhythms. From basic steps to advanced syncopation, tap helps dancers understand musicality and even helps with math!  Dancers will learn both classical and rhythmic forms of dance, and become musicians with their feet!

Jazz encompasses a wide variety of styles tracing back to African American vernacular dance.  It wasn’t until the 1950’s that jazz took a new direction with modern flare.  At Ignite, jazz dancers will learn traditional jazz technique, and learn classical, stylized, funk, and modern jazz choreography.

Lyrical is a mix between ballet, jazz, and contemporary art forms.  It is an expressive style that mirrors the lyrics. Dancers interpret the music, and expressing emotion through movement and facial expressions.  It is fluid, beautiful, and heartfelt.

Hip Hop is a fun, upbeat style of dance that is traditionally danced to hip hop music. Dancers will learn the latest dance moves, using their bodies to demonstrate all dimensions of current music.  Hip Hop technique is different from all other dance forms, including popping, locking, and breaking.

Contemporary has similar qualities as modern, jazz, and ballet, but is not classical. Contemporary dance is considered to be outside of the realm of traditional dance styles, and is not based off of traditional technical training.  However dancers benefit, and at Ignite are encouraged, to experience traditional technique to help them with contemporary choreography.

ADULT CLASSES:

Vinyasa/Hatha Yoga - All classes labeled "Yoga", "Warm Yoga", or "Hot Yoga" are Vinyasa or Hatha style classes.  All IGNITE instructors are certified through Yoga Alliance, bringing with them different backgrounds that translate into different class styles.  In each IGNITE yoga class you will find varying amounts of "flow" with breath to movement connection,  and also varying lengths of held postures.  All classes are well rounded with creative and intentional sequencing designed to move prana (life force energy) throughout the body.   IGNITE is fully equipped with yoga props and wall space that allow all levels of practicioners to practice safely and advance when ready.  If you are looking for a level 1 yoga class, try Gentle Yoga and/or Alignment Yoga.  If you are brand new to yoga start with the Intro to Yoga Series to familiarize yourself with the poses.

Alignment Yoga - Alignment yoga focuses on use of props such as belts, blocks, and blankets, to aid in the poses. This allows students to preform the postures correctly while minimizing risk of strain or injury. Alignment yoga aids in developing strength and flexibility for the body and is accessible for students with varying levels of strength and mobility.

Gentle Yoga –
Gentle yoga is for practitioners seeking a slower paced class focusing on slow transitions.  The use of props helps people of all levels and abilities get into poses safely.  This is a great way to recover from injury, or transition back into yoga after time off. Students brand new to yoga are encouraged to take the “Intro to Yoga Series”.

Intro to Yoga Series – This is a four-week series designed for the new yoga student.  You will have personalized time with the instructor to make sure you learn proper technique and most importantly are safe getting into yoga poses (asanas).  This Intro Series is interactive, so when something isn’t feeling right to you, the instructor can help you find a modification that suits your individual needs.

Regular Temperatures vs. Warm vs. Hot Yoga – At Ignite we believe that there is no one temperature that works for every yoga practitioner.  That is why we offer three options.  Our regular temperature classes run between 70 and 80 degrees, warm between 80 and 90, and hot classes between 94 and 104.  The heat works to preheat muscles, and assists the practitioner in taking asanas deeper.  In all classes you will generate your own heat and stimulate your “inner fire”.

Prenatal Yoga – This class is designed to strengthen and relax your body, ease your mind and connect with your baby in a safe and supportive environment. We use breath and postures to prepare women, both physically and emotionally, for the journey of pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood.  Feel inspired and nourished in a community of women sharing the experience of pregnancy and birth.

Guided Meditation is a class for those looking to meditation for simple stress reduction or for deeper personal growth and awareness.  Certified Spiritual Director David Wendleton, uses poetry, music, and story as resources throughout the class.
Sweet!!

Restorative Yoga is a theraputic type of yoga.  We take adaptations of classic postures where we are passively supported by props such as bolsters, blankets, chairs and blocks.
These postures help to restore the nervous system and unwind tension patterns.  We start class with a flow to warm the muscles and give the body a chance to release any restlessness before settling into a place of stillness.  The soothing well supported postures give us the opportunity to linger quietly for a few moments and savor the simple sweetness of life.

Burn Barre is a high energy, no impact workout, fusing the principles of ballet, weight-training, dance and core training. Using resistance and isometric training barre class uses an interval, weight bearing format at the ballet bar work and mat work. A short cardio section is also integrated into the class so students keep their heart-rate up allowing them to burn calories while sculpting muscles. Instructors pay attention to form alignment and, posture throughout the class. Students may bring yoga/pilates mat to class, or borrow one from IGNITE. Due to the constant movement students remain engaged and this fun, exciting hour class flies right by!

Zumba®Zumba®  When participants see a Zumba class in action, they can’t wait to give it a try. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats.
